Warnings That Strike Could Damage South Africa’s Economy

The South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) have warned that the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) industrial action today could possibly damage the South African economy running into billions of rand. COSATU has planned today to start countryside protest action against labour brokers, the casualisation of labour, attempt to restrict the right to strike and the imposition of e-tolling on Gauteng’s freeways. 32 marches have been planned across South Africa, with the most participation expected in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Tens of thousands of South Africans joined the one day national strike today hitting mining production. COSATU said today, “Despite the political and social gains scored since 1994, the working class in this country continues to reel under the pressure of neo-liberalism and the legacy of apartheid and colonialism.”

SACCI CEO, Neren Rau has said, “The impact could vary considerably depending on the extent of the protest activity and the duration, ranging from simply deriving the economy of labour to more serious impacts on economic infrastructure.”

Based on reports from Business Unity South Africa (BUSA), business activity has been disrupted in a number of key areas of the country. Production and deliveries have also been interrupted. According to a statement from BUSA they hope that the issues at stake around labour broking and e-tolling can now continues to be constructively discussed or negotiated in the appropriate structures to find acceptable compromises as soon as possible.
